Design fans will doubtless be aware of the Victoria and Albert’s extraordinary archive, which contains more than three million textile, wallpaper and print designs.
The museum is now making the most of this amazing resource by releasing a series of booklets about significant pattern-makers. The latest one focuses on Heal’s.
V&A Pattern: Heal’s is a visual summary of the golden age of Heal’s fabric design, from the end of the Second World War to the 1970s, when designers like Lucienne Day, Peter Hall and Barbara Brown were creating iconic designs under the watchful eye of Heal’s Fabrics director Tom Worthington.
Consisting of an essay by Mary Schoeser, followed by a chronological run-down of the most famous designs and a free CD of high-res images, the book is a must-have for any textile aficionado and a suitable tribute to the visionary genius of Tom Worthington.
One of the designs featured in the book, Indian Summer by Jyoti Bhomik, has since been updated, and now appears on gorgeous Heal’s bedlinen, cushions and throws in a range of colours.

When we moved into our first flat in Southampton, I made some curtains from material in the design on the front cover of this book (in a green colourway) and I recently bought some bed linen in the second pattern shown above (in a green/pink colourway). How amazing is that?
